Meet at 6:30AM at the east side parking lot of Walgreens on Appleway in Coeur d’ Alene. We will drive approximately 1 hour 20 minutes to the starting point of the hike, on Trestle Creek Road north of Hope, Idaho. If road conditions allow, we’ll drive all the way to Huckleberry Campground. Otherwise, we’ll park at the snowmobile lot and hike an extra mile each way. A four-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended. Please note that this snowshoe hike does not follow the normal summer trail to the summit, which crosses dangerous avalanche terrain. Instead, we will be using a route that takes advantage of safer terrain on the north side of the mountain. We will begin the hike by crossing a log over Trestle Creek, which could be coated in ice. Come prepared with traction devices for your boots. The route includes some moderate bushwhacking through dense trees and climbing a steep headwall to gain the summit ridge. If the sky is clear, we will be rewarded with 360-degree views from the 6149’ summit, including the Cabinet Mountains and Lake Pend Oreille. This is a strenuous snowshoe hike best suited for those who are physically fit and have some experience traveling in the winter backcountry. This area is wild and remote, so it’s unlikely we’ll see another person once we cross Trestle Creek. Please come prepared with your 13 essentials, with added emphasis on insulating clothing layers (no cotton) and high energy snacks. Make sure your headlamp has fresh batteries in case we’re out later than planned. The route is 8 to 10 miles round trip with about 3500’ elevation gain. A detailed map of the route is included under “Documents”. Inclement weather or high avalanche danger may cancel. I will be in touch with all who sign up prior to the outing.
