We’ll meet at the McDonalds near Medical Lake exit 272. From there we’ll carpool to the Ancient Lakes trailhead north of George, WA. Babcock bench stretches 20 miles along the east side of the Columbia River. From the trailhead, we’ll hike towards the river and explore the northernmost reaches of the bench. Along the way, we’ll enjoy incredible views and navigate through a complex maze of basalt bluffs, ridges and craters. The highest bluffs along the bench contain an abundance of hedgehog cacti that are rare in other parts of Washington. They are common enough here that you will need to watch your step when hiking off trail. We’ll loop back to the trailhead for a roundtrip distance of 9 – 10 miles. Some of this hike will be off trail on terrain that can be loose, rocky and steep in places. A Discover Pass is required to park at the trailhead. Group Size Limit is 12.
