Schools and Clinics: Ice Climbing Seminar

School directors: and

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of climbing steep waterfall ice and is open to all Spokane Mountaineers who are Mountain School Graduates.  The 2009 Seminar will consist of one indoor session in Spokane Valley, and the outdoor sessions will be held in the beautiful Canadian Rockies around Banff and Lake Louise. Attending the indoor session is mandatory if you plan on attending any of the outdoor sessions.  See the event write up for a description of each session.

It must be noted that ice climbing is a dangerous activity.  Each registered participant will be responsible for his/her own actions.  Students are expected to have basic mountaineering skills, including some technical climbing experience and must be in good physical and mental condition.  All climbers must be 18 years of age or older and will be required to furnish equipment and clothing appropriate to ice climbing conditions.  Students are required to bring plastic or leather boots (full shank), 12-point crampons (rigid preferred), and any ice tools to the indoor session.  There will be ice tools for the students to use in Canada.  However, you can rent tools and crampons in Canmore if you prefer to have your own set.

Veteran ice climbers are encouraged to attend.  The more instructors, the better the quality of instruction and the more fun for everyone.

MOUNTAIN SCHOOL II will have separate ice climbing instruction on both days of the seminar.   Day 1 will include mock leading on top rope, a grade WI2+WI3, plus other climbing to sharpen your skills.  As the first day begins, advanced students will be involved in setting up and tearing down top roped set ups.  Day 2 and 3 will be more of the same with steeper leads, anchors, repel anchor demonstrations, and more climbing of WI4 ice.

Schedule information: Indoor: TBA. Outdoor: Canadian Rockies around Banff and Lake Louise TBA.

Registration information: Contact Rich Bennett or Jason Baker. The cost for this seminar will be $45. The cost does NOT include lodging for the outdoor sessions. We have reserved beds in the Bell Cabin at the ACC in Canmore, Alberta, Cost for lodging is $24 per night per person on a first come first served basis. There are also other accommodations in Canmore and Banff.
